About Us
Located within the unique ecosystem of Mount Ida, the Kazdağı Institute of Biotechnology Research (KABAE) was established in 2010 as part of Western Anatolia University. Since then, the Institute has conducted advanced biotechnological studies in one of Anatolia’s richest regions in terms of plant diversity.
Our campus functions as a fully integrated research hub where resident scientists live and work throughout the year. Welcoming both national and international researchers, KABAE offers an immersive environment where scientific inquiry is carried out in direct dialogue with nature.
Fields of Research
-
Biological Analysis of Endemic Plant Species
Comprehensive profiling of species native to the Mount Ida ecosystem, with a focus on conservation-driven molecular studies.
-
Phytochemistry
Isolation and characterization of bioactive compounds with medicinal and pharmacological potential.
-
Genetic Modification & Plant Tissue Culture
Advanced methodologies for genetic transformation, micropropagation, and in-vitro cultivation of rare or high-value species.
-
Drug Precursor Discovery
Identification and development of plant-derived precursor molecules for pharmaceutical research.
-
Ecosystem Monitoring & Biodiversity Mapping
Long-term ecological surveys, habitat modeling, and remote-sensing supported biodiversity assessments.
-
Plant-Based Formulations for the Food & Cosmetic Industries
Research and development of functional extracts, natural additives, and sustainable botanical ingredients.
Infrastructure
Our campus is situated near one of the high ridges of Mount Ida and was designed with a strong commitment to environmental sensitivity. The complex is a single, integrated structure where laboratories and living quarters blend seamlessly with the surrounding landscape.
Facilities include:
• Kitchen & Communal Dining Area
• Researcher Accommodation Units
• Rest & Recreation Room
• Microscopy and Analytical Suites
• Core Laboratories
• DNA Repository
• Field Observation Equipment and Camping Gear
Resident Researcher Programme
KABAE’s Resident Researcher Program offers scientists the opportunity to conduct their work in direct contact with the natural environment. Participants reside on campus, make full use of the laboratory infrastructure, and pursue their own research projects while contributing to ongoing institute initiatives.
All program expenses are fully funded through the European Union’s Horizon Europe Program.
Living Spaces
All researchers reside in private on-campus accommodation throughout the program, with all essential equipment for their work supplied by the Institute. Due to the remote location of the campus, food services, logistics, security, and basic medical needs are provided on site.
Electricity, internet, and core infrastructure systems are fully available, and the entire facility operates on a sustainable, carefully regulated energy-use model.
Our Team
KABAE is led by an interdisciplinary community of scientists. Our team brings together researchers specializing in plant genetics, ecology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and related fields.
